Ruins of Calica
Description
Ruins of Calica is a short action adventure video game in the style of early 3D video games, taking a lot of inspiration from Ocarina of Time. It's a rough demo of a project I hope to continue.
You play as Smudge, a cat on a quest to explore the ruins of the ancient city of Calica. Fight monsters and discover the secrets hidden within!
Controls
- Move - WASD / Right stick
- Camera - Mouse / Left stick
- Attack - Left Click / X
- Special Attack - Right Click / Y
- Dodge - Alt / B
- Jump - Space / A
- Interact - E / A
- Center Camera - Shift / Left Trigger
Web Version Troubleshooting
With how web versions are, there are several issues you may encounter. I recommend the downloadable version if possible.
- NOTE: On slower computers, the game may take around a minute to load for the first time. This is normal.
- In the game settings, lowering the resolution to 640x480 will improve performance significantly.
- I recommend running the game on Chrome, I have had the best luck with it.
- The game will not run on on iOS.
- The web version does support controllers, but web browsers have inconsistent controller support so it may or may not work for you. I've had the best luck with Chrome.

Great groundwork for something great. Really enjoyed it

What you've done so far is a massive achievement.
Not sure if you wanted some feedback, but I have notes of a few things that stuck out to me. Mainly a lot of the game _feel_ is kinda flat.
Interaction feedback, and juice - a lot of things don't feel very impactful. For instance the player's seconds ability [#3], the wind up feels slow and the tail end of it feels short and uneventful.
Picking up health items doesn't feel like anything is happening.
Some enemy attacks could use more telegraphing.
Does the sword attack have any variations? Probably all of these could use more animation _steps_ (things happening in a staggered fashion gives more impact) and additional particle effects.
The levels could use a little something more. Maybe addition set dressings. and things to break or pick up? Actually I think would they really need is to imply a larger world. Like a skybox that hints to the tree tops of a wide forest. Or an inaccessible side of the caves opening to a wide inaccessible cavern or underground lake.
W doesn't work so I can't move forward :(((
super cute and fun game! though the mouse only works when it isn't captured by the window in the browser version.
Great job. Played it through. Thanks for your YouTube video on behavior trees.
Fantastic!
found this through your Beehave behavior tree video. Love the vibe of this game and the clear zelda inspiration was a big reason i was excited to try it out!
There's a great foundation here and I think if you eventually spruce up the animations/game feel of the character controller it would feel absolutely amazing.
I have a generic usb controller and the left trigger for camera/lock-on didn't work, but it didn't matter that much.
Anyway I hope you keep working on this because it's incredibly charming <3
Really nice game! Great easter eggs :)
I only found one annoying bug where falling into abyss will keep respawning over it making you fall until you run out of HP.
Very nice progress so far.
Made me tear up in a happy way :')
add a self pic mode pls lol
Nice game!

I really got some Zelda vibe from this game. Nice game design, it is intuitively clear where to go next and how the game works. The stylization of 90s games is a success - it evokes nostalgia. Variety of mobs and bosses also is a bonus point for your game. Combat and puzzles are nice, hope you'll extend them into more difficult ways. I really hope that you will make a full version of this game.
A bit of suggestions: I didn't understood the RMB attack - looks like it has the same damage as regular attack but slower. Also controls are a bit unusual - I forgot when I last used an Alt button in games and sometimes I forgot to enable/disable abilities. Soundtrack is a bit repetitive but that's not a big problem or me.
Thank you for a nice game!
P.S. This should be a meme template:
Pretty cute, though the combat could be a bit smoother, it was very well made.
goes hard feel free to screenshot
Really well done. I wanted to keep playing, I hope we get a full release one day. I was very invested in cat dark souls. Phenomenal easter eggs inside too.
Well, the style is charming already! And the special powers allude to the beginnings of a fun, fantasy adventure! I look forward to your progress on "Ruins of Calica" !
No thoughts, head empty.
Nice this was very good demo game so far but could you set a setting so that I could change the control keys when you ad the alt key where the character spin on the ground it's strange to me but it would be easier for me to use the left shift key anyway games was very good and well made and I might play full version when is release and is this coming to Steam too? again anyway well done keep it up!
Remappable controls is high on the list for things to work on. glad you liked it!
